Dan Peterson M.D., MPH, Principal


Dr. Peterson is a Principle in the Cavanaugh Consulting Group (CCG).   His passion is helping organizations achieve real financial and clinical ROI on their health information technology, especially in the areas of Clinical Decision Support, data warehousing, and surveillance & reporting systems.

Dr. Peterson’s career has been about creating new ways to measure, track and control problems in health and healthcare.  As founder and CEO of Cereplex, he and his team created products to monitor and improve healthcare-acquired infection prevention, antibiotic therapy of hospitalized patients, outpatient treatment of follow-up of sexually-transmitted diseases, and diabetes screening and care.  Users for the products include physicians, nurses, pharmacists and administrators.

Dr. Peterson has also lead studies and developed systems in areas as diverse as disease registries and outcomes databases; new HEDIS measure testing; outbreak response; electronic laboratory reporting; lead and methyl mercury exposure; malaria, plague, and other exotic diseases;.  He has extensive experience working internationally and is an author on more than 40 peer-reviewed publications.

    • Assisted in the integration of Cereplex as a business unit (now called SafetySurveillor) within Premier
    • Lead the continuing product development of SafetySurveillor
    • Assisted with sales and marketing of  SafetySurveillor
    • Consulted broadly within Premier on strategic opportunities and potential new product offerings

    • Developed web-based surveillance technologies for hospital infection control and antibiotic management
    • Acted as Principle investigator on NIH and AHRQ grants that supported our software development and evaluation
    • Developed an epidemiology infrastructure for the 42 Indian tribes of Arizona, Nevada, and Utah, including data access and confidentiality, routine analysis and outbreak response, program planning and evaluation, and staff training and development Acted as Principle investigator on NIH and AHRQ grants that supported our software development and evaluation
    • Developed web-based surveillance technologies for hospital infection control and antibiotic management
    • Sold the company to Premier, Inc

    • Developed protocols for field testing new HEDIS measures
    • Consulted on the creation of new disease registries and outcomes databases
    • Designed clinical trials for FDA approval and HCFA reimbursement


  • Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC),  Various positions
    • Oversaw Epidemiology and Laboratory Capacity Cooperative Agreement Program for detecting, reporting and responding to emerging infectious diseases
    • Coordinated the National Center for Infectious Diseases’ response to managed care, including the impact of changes in medical practice on disease diagnosis and treatment
    • Consulted to Zimbabwe field training program, supervising physicians and nurses in studies of disease risk factors and outcomes, surveillance and health information systems, and program process and impact
    • Supervised CDC field officers investigating a broad range of infectious disease, chronic disease, and environmental health topics
    • Set up monthly electronic reporting by CDC field officers and revamped the outbreak database to automate updating of project status.
    • Conducted state and national studies on chronic disease including obesity, diabetes, prostate cancer, alcohol, and tobacco; and environmental health issues including mercury and lead

    • Established five ongoing projects in community-based primary health care, an area-wide family planning program, and an AIDS prevention program
    • Formed and grew the Community Health Department to a staff of 27, developing and instituting management systems for supervision, staff training, information flow, and financial control
